What you need
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Start with A4 paper. Cut two identical squares.
- 2
Take the first square. Fold in half horizontally. Crease and unfold. Fold in half vertically. Crease and unfold.
- 3
Fold in half diagonally both ways. Crease and unfold.
- 4
Cut along each horizontal and vertical crease from the edge toward the center, stopping halfway. You now have four cuts, each reaching halfway to the center.
- 5
Each cut creates a flap. Fold each flap into a cone shape by bringing one edge over the other and securing the overlap.
- 6
You should have four cone-shaped points arranged in a cross pattern. This is one half of the star.
- 7
Repeat steps 2-6 with the second square to create the other half of the star.
- 8
Rotate one half 45 degrees relative to the other so the points alternate (8 points total).
- 9
Place the two halves together, nesting the flat centers against each other.
- 10
Secure the two halves by folding small tabs from one half around the points of the other half.
- 11
The star should now be a complete 3D form with 8 points radiating outward.
- 12
At the bottom, leave a small opening between two points (or cut a hole) large enough for a small LED tealight.
- 13
Insert an LED tealight (never a real candle) through the opening.
- 14
The paper diffuses the light, making the entire star glow softly.
- 15
Attach a string to the top point for hanging.
- 16
Your paper star lantern is complete and creates a warm, ambient glow.
